Close reading in art / symmetry and balance
This graphic organizer we use in Art to help use "Close Read" or look for details and identify the parts of art in a painting or piece of artwork. We have begun to use this in our Art writing!
This month's (March) Art unit is about Symmetry and Balance. The leprechaun drawing below is balanced out with the hat taking up the top "half" of the paper and the head and body in the lower "half". When we talk about balance in art, we are saying that it means the same amount; the same amount of space, color or shapes etc.
In this version of the leprechaun ( 1st grade and kindergarten) the drawing is balanced out with the hat taking up the top half and the face taking up the lower half.
In this project, Symmetrical Names/Words, the students wrote their word on half of the paper and reversed transfer the image to the other side of the paper to create a symmetrical design. After they did this step, they color and created designs in the negative space on both sides to match each other in a symmetrical manor and balanced out the lines so that all the lines looked equal.
These projects below are third and fourth grade.
